    Re: best free forum engine

Should it run on a LAMP (Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP) hosting or should it run on Windows Server hosting or do you just want to make your own forumboards without having to own a website?

You can go to Proboards.com for an absolutely free forumboard, if that's what you mean.

    Re: best free forum engine

Well, there are a LARGE amount of open-source PHP forums out there. Many hosting services actually provide these for free, and give assistance to setting one up on your own website.

For .NET solutions which work with Windows hosting, you might want to search for one in CodePlex (http://codeplex.com)

If you are referring to classic asp which is part of visual studio 6

If yes, no they are not the same.

ASP.NET has .NET Framework - It needs .NET Framework 1.1 or 2.0 or 3.0 or 3.5 depending on what version of ASP.NET you wish to choose ...

    ASP has no framework ....

    Re: best free forum engine

If you gonna use DNN, you need to install .NET Famework + IIS

    only for CMS

But if you need to custom some modules, you need to install Visual Studio ... ASP.NET on your machine

    Re: best free forum engine

for PHP: http://www.thefreecountry.com/php/messageboards.shtml (just check out what you need, it's a compilation of free php scripts for community builder).

for ASP: With Dot Net Nuke, it could handle the task or http://subtextproject.com/ . The best thing is to write it yourself. Of course nobody has the time, so I guess here are your options:

    http://www.codeplex.com/CASK
    http://www.codeplex.com/blogengine

** There is no such thing as free community builder (forum/blog/membership), unless you are working with opensource environment.

    Re: best free forum engine

in addition to what i wrote earlier:

    ASP:

    CMS: DotNetNuke
Blog: Text, now SubText. Others might suggest Community Server/Builder, but it is a bit too much for just a simple blogging.
    Forums: Community Server
    Wiki: FlexWiki

    PHP:

    CMS: Joomla
    Blog: WordPress
    Forums: vBulletin
    Wiki: Wikimedia

    Re: best free forum engine

I suggest trying out phpBB. phpBB 3 is by far the best forum software I’ve ever used, it’s open-source so it’s free to download and use. It’s simple and doesn’t include all the “unneccessary” features you speak off. It’s minimal. Vanilla doesn’t even come close to competing with phpBB, so yeah - give it a try.
If you haven't got much time, and want to see what the new phpbb3 can offer, just try it out on this host : free forum hosting

    Re: best free forum engine

well, if tama yung nabasa ko, john paul wanted a windows-based forum para sa site nya. either ASP or ASP.NET. so out of the scene na itong PHP or LAMP-based forums.

well, i got my free "non-commercial" version of Community Server for my personal project site. it is already part of the free applications the web hoster offers. if its only the forums you wanted, then it might probably be an overkill na. but for communities as a whole? then...kaya nga tinawag na Community Server.

DNN is also a very good CMS. but the looks of this is very much like PHPNuke. though you can modify the looks by advanced features. Smile

if john paul has already a hosted site, then maybe there are available web apps or site apps ready to be installed for free for your website just like mine. i installed a non-commercial CS for my personal website.

    Re: best free forum engine

I suggest installing them all and see what you like.

On the PHP side I don't recommend php-nuke, it just sucks, that's all. Joomla and post-nuke are great though!
