Windows Vista Deployment Series

Part 1 - Introduction

I will write in my blog a series discussing Windows Vista Deployment. It's just lately that I get to study through and through the different methods on how to automatically deploy Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista. If you would think that you need to buy additional products to automatically deploy server and client operating systems, that's a misconception up to a point. Some of the tools are out there for free, maybe we're not just looking hard enough.

First up, we have Windows Deployment Services. This is an available role in Windows Server 2008.

Then we have the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) 2008. This replaces the Business Desktop Deployment (BDD) 2007.

Next in MDT we have the Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK). MDT and WAIK enables what's called Lite Touch Installation or LTI. This is installing the OS with minimal intervention.

Then finally to have Zero Touch Installation or ZTI, we can use the System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM).

In this series, I will discuss the steps that I made in installing my lab in preparation for the partner readiness trainings I will conduct for the Southeast Asia Microsoft subsidiaries.

This product replaces the Business Desktop Deployment (BDD) 2007. WDS is required by MDT. The procedure for implementing MDT is rather long, but we can break it down into more manageable components as follows:
